Our Focus (objectives)
Environclean protect and preserves Environment for communities through a focus on:
Waste Reduction and Recycling:
- waste minimisation consultancy advice in low income areas
- collection of waste from slum settlements
- recycling, green waste treatment and recovery
- disposal of residuals via treatment, landfill or energy from waste facilities
provision of services to local authorities in Kenya such as civic amenity sites - developing technological solutions to industrial waste problems
Promoting green technologies:
Constant appraisal of waste trends and a continuing investment in research and development are at the heart of Environclean’s leadership. Current research includes:
- bio-centers for sanitation, slaughter houses, pig farming
- recycling facilities for low-income settlements and industrial waste including hazardous materials
- site restoration for leisure on waste lands
Our History
After a trip in 2006 to a slum in Kenya and seeing first hand the hopelessness of the situation and the untapped potential and opportunities, Caroline Kariuki started to fundraise for an integrated waste management system raising £14,010 through Local corporate sponsors in Peterborough, UK and supporters like Kitchen Table Charities, Allan & Nesta Ferguson Charity, Dorfred Trust, Mary Webb Trust, Thomas Sivewright charity, Eleanor F Rathbone Trust, SMB Charitable Trust, Radley Charity, Bower Trust, whose grants have made it possible to undertake the project you will find outlined in this website.
Environclean Community Group (1120470) was registered as a charity with the UK and Wales charity commission in August 2007. Unlike many charities, Environclean’s UK administration costs are minimal. This means that nearly every penny goes directly to support Environclean’s work Transforming lives among disadvantaged communities in urban slums of Nairobi, Kenya. Whilst in Kenya, Environclean’s staff and volunteers do not drive around in 4x4s, stay in expensive hotels or put on grandiose conferences in expensive venues. Instead they live, eat and travel with local people, thus forging closer links with communities and saving costs. This will continue to be the approach of our work in the years to come.
Our sister Community Based Organisation (CBO), Studying Problems Fix-it (SPIF) is a registered community based organisation under Ministry of Sports & Cullture in Kenya (Registration No. 09415) in 2006. It is run by the Projects Evaluator, Joan Kariuki and financial administrator, Nicolas Gatugi. They are all part-time workers
Trustees
Environclean is governed by a board of trustees who give strategic direction, leadership and monitor all aspects of performance. There are more than 50 members affiliated to Environclean.
Chair of Environclean: Mrs. Caroline Kariuki, B.Sc. CIWM is a founder member of Environclean Community Group. Her background is in environmental science with her expertise being in different aspects of the broad fields of waste management, ecological restoration, renewable energy technologies. She has more than 12 years experience in environmental related issues in Europe, Africa and 5 years as a social reformer. She is current working as a researcher in aspects of water and sanitation and also is project manager of Environclean. She is the main contact person for the group.
Organising Secretary: Mrs. Angela Kavila-Kwingais trustee involved with all aspects of volunteer management and events co-ordination. Her background is in pharmacy
Treasurer: Mr. Nicolas Gatugileads a CBO in Kenya. He is has experience as a community organiser. He is an active social enterpreneur. He is the trustee who oversees the accounting of Environclean.
Project Evaluator: Ms. Joan Kariuki, B.Commwas the first volunteer to work with Environclean in Kenya. She is a business woman with a background in management.
Fundraising: Mr. Tim Bruntmanages the fundraising team
